Halal and JAS Organic Certification

All of our teas are Halal certified, and our organic teas are also certified under Japan's JAS Organic standard. Here is what each one means.

Halal Certified

Halal means "permissible" in Arabic. A Halal certificate confirms that a food, and the way it is processed, handled and packed, follows Islamic dietary law. Green tea is a plant, so the leaf itself is never the question. The certification covers everything around it: the processing and packing facility, the equipment and cleaning agents, and any added ingredients, such as the roasted rice in genmaicha.

JAS Certified Organic

JAS stands for Japanese Agricultural Standards, set by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. In Japan, tea can only be sold as organic if it carries the organic JAS mark. To earn it, the tea must be grown without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers, and the farm and processor are inspected by a certification body registered with the Ministry.
