Matcha Package Design Contest Results — FAQ

What was the Matcha Package Design Contest?

The Matcha Package Design Contest invited customers to help choose the final package design for our new Kagoshima Matcha tea. As we were working to expand our quality tea catalog from Japan, we had narrowed the design options to several finalists but couldn't decide between them — so we asked you. The contest gave customers a direct say in the product's visual identity, turning what is normally an internal business decision into a community-driven choice.

Which design won the contest?

The winner was the green design with the white line — receiving 36.8% of votes. The runner-up was the black design with no lines, which took second place by a smaller margin. After tallying the votes and taking into account the qualitative feedback from participants, we finalized the green-with-white-line design and put it into production. The actual package now used on our Kagoshima Matcha matches that winning design.

Why did we let customers vote on the design?

Two reasons. First, the design choice was genuinely close — we had several strong candidates and no clear internal winner. Inviting customer votes turned a stuck decision into a productive outcome. Second, involving customers in product decisions builds engagement and creates a sense of shared ownership — many participants told us they were excited to see "their" design on shelves. The collaborative approach is one we plan to repeat for future product decisions when the choices are close.

What Matcha was released with the new design?

The Matcha released in the new packaging was made from our 2021 first-crop harvest. First-crop (ichibancha) leaves are the most prized of the year — picked from late April through May, they contain the highest concentration of L-theanine and the freshest flavor profile. Pairing the freshest possible Matcha with a customer-selected package design made the launch particularly memorable. The Matcha continues in production with this design today.

What did contest participants receive as thanks?

To thank everyone who participated in voting, we created a limited 10%-off coupon (code CONTEST21) for the new Matcha. Beyond the discount, participants received the satisfaction of seeing their chosen design in production and on the market. Many returning customers continue to tell us they appreciated being involved in the decision — a small example of how community involvement can strengthen the relationship between a craft producer and the customers who care about the products.
